On the attached pictures you can see some of our experiments.
On the last one you can see the light bulb over the plants. It turns ON at dusk and OFF in the morning. This really accelerates the growth of the plants and the Snow Peas, that usually gives you pods on 72 days, gave us pods on 54 days. We charge the batteries during the day with our solar panels and during the night the plants can still do some work on the photosynthesis. We need to further research this subject as we need to find the correct wave length of the spectrum that gives the best performance for the photosynthesis as well as buy the light source with these wave lengths. I read about some LED kits, with two wave lengths, that claims to do the job but I have to buy it and test.


The only soil amendment that we are using is the scats from our Vermicompost. It is surprising the difference in taste that we have on our vegetables compared to the what we buy. The tomatoes taste sweet and with lots of flavors. The Arugula tastes as if it was crossed with peppers. It really carries some punch like Horse Radish or something alike.
We are aiming to be "self sustainable" in vegetables but we have limitation on amount of sun light that the plants receive. This is due to the small size of our backyard as well as the position of our home which makes shade on the backyard from Noon onwards on Summer time.
As you can see our tomatoes have what appears to be fungus on their leaves and that is a result of poor sun incidence. I have recently moved them to a better spot (It is good to have a "movable" garden!) and they started to get new branches clear of fungus.

The black rectangular containers are from Home Depot and they are basically used as a concrete/stucco mixer. Their height allows to grow large plants with deep roots. They come in two sizes and they are very easy to accommodate on any lay out.
After using them for about a year we did something different with the new ones we just bought. Instead of cutting holes on the bottom of it, we cut the holes on the sides at a height of about 1.5". We noticed that the moisture is better retained and also it will decrease the loss of nutrients that are carried away with the water from irrigation.

The milk containers are e new experiment to take advantage of the not used vertical space. They are good to grow Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Eggplants and you just need to adjust the size of the planting window to avoid the soil to erode trough it.
Our next step is to install an dripping system irrigation. Currently we are not collecting water from rain as it has been a while since we last had shower and we a under water restriction. Since the air conditioning is ON all the time, due to the high temperatures, we collect water from the condensation tube. It is not much but give us about 4 GL/day which, for dripping irrigation of the size we need, is a good help. We will cover the soil with plastic and plant the vegetables on small holes cut on the plastic. This will avoid a big loss of water by evaporation and the dripping tubes will run under the plastic.
